Adult Education Opportunities

We encourage all members of our community to explore the many opportunities to learn as part of our Temple Solel family. Education does not stop with the Bar/Bat Mitzvah or when one finishes college. Jewish education can begin or resume at any time!

Life-long learning is fundamental to a robust and intellectually stimulating Jewish life. Participating in Jewish learning facilitates the development of lasting friendships and a strong sense of belonging to a vibrant spiritual community. By examining issues from a Jewish perspective, participants can enhance their own understanding of human behavior, values, and ethics that impact every aspect of personal and professional life.

We host several weekly Adult Education offerings, along with a plethora of special offerings and events. Some classes and programs have limited enrollment, we recommend that attendees register early! See more about our upcoming events on the Temple Solel Calendar, and review our weekly opportunities below.

Have you always wanted to study traditional text? Curious about the Talmud? Join us for a year long, deep dive swimming in the sea of Talmud! Come and see how profound and relevant our ancient teachings feel, especially now. You will be surprised.

Join Rabbi Berk and the Coastal Roots Farm team as we spend the autumn learning about ethical farming, and the eco-Jewish values that animate this local agricultural wonderland. Each session will involved both Jewish learnig and working the land – with focus on the themes of interdependence, wonder, fixing the world, and interfacing with the land.

Join this meditation practice, for newbies, skeptics, longtime lovers of meditation, and everyone in between.

Rabbi Berk provides intentions, framing, and Jewish insight that will help guide your meditation experience.

Feel like doing a deeper dive into your spiritual life? What does that mean? Seeking meaning in the mundane? Interested in integrating profound Jewish wisdom and a depth-mindset into the everyday and creating Jewishly mindful rhythms in personal and family life? Up for an individual session of consultation and connection, as you explore more deeply the encounters, relationships, and experiences in your life, through a lens of Jewish wisdom and spiritual comfort?  Connect with Rabbi Berk, one-on-one, at your convenience.

Have you ever wanted to stand up on a wave? Have you ever wanted to become one with the ocean? Have you ever thought, I want to do this but I just don’t know how to do it safely?

Surfing is a way to strengthen our connection to the natural environment and the divine. We will look, feel and experience the ocean together from the beach and in the water. Learn from experienced surfers and receive the power of what the ocean has to offer us. We are partnering with the Oceanside Surf School. They are talented and very experienced!

Who: Beginners who have never or almost never been on a surfboard. Teens or adults.

Where: South of the Oceanside Pier. Meet in the grassy playground area.

Why: Because you want to connect with your community, your cantor, the ocean, and you want to learn how to surf in a safe, joyful, uplifting, positive environment.

Build relationships, connect in a small group setting, and share candidly the experience of modern Jewish fatherhood. Led by Cantor Tiep, this group will meet monthly to participate in lively “real talk” discussions about parenthood, spiritual growth and exploration led by the Cantor, and create a space where fathers can learn from and with each other.

The Pop Up Choir is back! It’s easy, fun, spiritual, and requires no prior music experience.

We need your voice to add to the collective sound, and here is the secret… if you love shabbat services and don’t know the tunes then this is a great way to learn some of that beautiful music.

You may be asking why should I go to Israel and what will we be doing?

It’s one thing to talk about and describe the holy land. It’s another to see with your own eyes, to taste the food, to hear the sounds, to touch the Western Wall of the Holy of Holies and to feel the emotions of the Israel experience that is not possible from 7,600 miles away.

My vision is for us to experience Israel through its history with a sharp point to the future. That means, connecting with Israeli non-profit organizations doing exceptional work in the community, learning about Israeli technology, learning to cook Israeli food with its divine spices and aromas, and being able to walk away from this trip with your heart full in every sense. Your senses will come alive and your heart will flutter for this magical place.

Plus, you will experience Israel, spirituality and prayerful moments, making connections and hopefully new friends – all with fellow Temple Solel members. And, it’s an amazing place to vacation!

Would you like to begin your new year delving into conversations, conflicts and deep understandings surrounding Jewish life and ideas?  Jewish wisdom draws on an unbroken record of experience and thought facing vital questions in the world and society. The Foundations class will bring millennia of thoughtful debates and framing to bear on our own contemporary world.

As grandparents, we have the opportunity to create a unique and special relationship with our grandchildren. We can be caregivers, teachers and playmates.  During our Graceful Grandparenting sessions, we will talk about how we can be a part of our grandchildren’s lives and consider the beauty of Jewish insight and wisdom to guide us. Join us!

Join this lovely group of caring and involved adult students who love the Hebrew language and love learning Hebrew together. We will be translating engaging Hebrew stories and learning some grammar along the way. You can attend once, sporadically or every class.
