Club 7 - Family Learning
B’nei Mitzvah Families participate in learning with the Clergy and lay-organized volunteerism throughout the 7th grade year. Together, the families participate in six Shabbat morning learning experiences, direct service mitzvah engagements, and prayer and torah practice.
This cohort model deeply connects families with each other and the clergy, creating a supportive and relationally bonded b’nei mitzvah group. Because families have learned and volunteered together, they are more invested in the success of each other’s students and even more excited to attend friends b’nei mitzvah services.
Rabbi Berk and Cantor Tiep ignite curiosity through experiential and lively discussions on topics like:
– Honest and candid conversations with students and families that have gone through the B’nei Mitzvah experience previously
– Torah orientation: learning how to care, carry, and work with the torah hands on
– Jewish and Hebrew name origins, stories, and etymology
– Understanding, dissecting, and engaging with prayer
B’nei Mitzvah
Becoming b’nei mitzvah at Temple Solel is filled with stimulating classes and tutoring, connection with clergy, and class cohorts. The preparation process is designed to be challenging, but not burdensome; devoted but not by obligation. The preparation leads to a true mastery of Hebraica (decoding and sight-reading of Hebrew) and Judaica (Jewish context and content).
Parents and students are offered great opportunities for meaningful Jewish enrichment – the level of which is meant to create love and intrigue with Judaism for a lifetime. In many Jewish communities, the b’nei mitzvah celebration represents a graduation of sorts. Our approach to b’nei mitzvah at Temple Solel is a bit different. Becoming b’nei mitzvah is a trailhead that leads to a journey of rich, fulsome teen education and community. In other words, after the honor of b’nei mitzvah – a profound spiritual, communal, and educational process truly begins. And, it all leads to a lifetime of enduring Jewish fulfillment.
